a few words can do a lot
I love words.
Which is probably fairly obvious, since I keep engraving them onto things.
Not long speeches. Not paragraphs of inspirational advice telling you to dance like nobody’s watching. Please do dance like nobody’s watching (boogie down with your funky self) but that’s not what I mean.
Usually just a few words. But the right ones can bring back an entire story that nobody outside your family or friend group would understand.
why the right words matter.
To me, that’s what makes personalized gifts meaningful: choosing something that makes a person feel known. Sometimes that’s I know you love books known. Sometimes it’s I know you’ll swear you’re never running another marathon and then sign up for one three days later known. (That’s me, by the way.)
That’s what I want my gifts to do.
To make someone stop for a second. Maybe they laugh. Maybe they go quiet. Maybe they look at you and say, “Oh my God, this is SO me.”
Because the gift has said something before you’ve had to explain it.
Words don’t only connect us to other people, either. Sometimes they bring us back to ourselves.
Three words. But on the right morning, when you’re doubting yourself and wondering whether you’ve completely lost your mind, they can feel like a small shove in the right direction.
And sometimes words don’t need to carry the emotional weight of the world. Sometimes they’re just funny. A ridiculous comment about drinks, books, mahjong or the dog’s legally mandated cheese tax (don’t forget it!) can create a tiny moment of happiness every time someone sees it.
That counts too.
giving words somewhere to stay.
I think that’s why I like engraving words so much. It gives them somewhere to stay.
They’re no longer buried in a text thread or written inside a card that may eventually disappear into a drawer. They sit on the table beneath your morning coffee or your evening glass of bubbly. They come out when friends gather. They become part of someone’s home and part of the ordinary moments happening around them.
Beautiful materials matter. Making something well matters.
But the right words?
They’re what make it mean something.
